Mumbai: Netflix on Tuesday announced that production has begun on the second season of its comedy-drama series 'The Royals', with actor Ishaan Khatter set to reprise his role.

Bhumi Pednekar, who starred opposite Khatter in the first season, will not return for the new chapter. The second season will be directed by Nitya Mehra and Tanuj Chopra.

Created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy, the first season was released in May 2025 and featured in Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English TV Shows across 58 countries.

The first season followed the romance between Aviraaj Singh (Khatter), a charming but carefree prince from the financially struggling royal family of Morpur, and Sophia Kanmani Shekhar (Pednekar), a self-made entrepreneur and CEO looking to expand her luxury homestay business.

The two were forced to work together to transform the crumbling royal palace into a luxury bed-and-breakfast. However, their contrasting personalities and ambitions led to clashes, family rivalries and an unexpected romance.

Veteran actor Zeenat Aman, along with Sakshi Tanwar, Vihaan Samat and Kavya Trehan, will also reprise their roles in the second season, Netflix said.

"The story will continue on a grander scale, with more kingdoms entering the fold, new alliances, rivalries and romances in the making, proving once again that royal life is anything but orderly," the streaming service said.

Creators Rangita and Ishita said the response to the first season had made their journey with the show special.

"We’re excited to return to this world of larger-than-life characters, complicated relationships and a family that never runs short of surprises. With season two, we’re looking forward to taking the story forward, bringing back the characters audiences have come to love, and turning up the romance, humour and family drama.

"There’s so much more to explore in Morpur, and we can’t wait for audiences to join us for another season of love, laughter and royally entertaining chaos!" they said in a joint statement.

Tanya Bami, Series Head at Netflix India, said the second season would explore Morpur in greater depth while expanding the story with new relationships, rivalries and characters.

"Rangita and Ishita Nandy have created a world that can be glamorous one minute and hysterically chaotic the very next, and with Tanuj Chopra and Nitya Mehra directing this season, we’re excited to see that mix of heart, humour and drama evolve to take the next season to an even higher level," she added.
